With them were their two young children Elizabeth Summers Laidlaw and John Gardner Laidlaw. Their third child Janet (called Jess)Smith Laidlaw was born in Sydney on 3rd December 1912.
Agnes Summers Laidlaw (nee indsay)was a tailoress.
James, who was affectionally known to his grandchildren & great grandchildren as 'Dad Jim' was a men's hairdresser who started his career as a soap boy in Hamilton, Lanark, and became a hairdresser journeyman.
In those days, upon graduation from any apprenticeship, one was known as a journeyman; that stage or 'journey' between being an apprentice and becoming a master of that trade. Being a 'journeyman' (from the french Jour) means that you can now you apprenticeship is completed, you can charge a full 'day' rates.
After working as a journeyman for a specified period, sometimes ten years or more, he may go on to study or test as a master in his field. Hence; Master Carpenter,Master Tailor, Master Hairdresser. A 'Master' could employ others. James worked as a men's hairdresser in Rockdale NSW until he retired in the 1960's.
